Colombia has endured a brutal armed conflict for more than six decades. In late 2016, the Colombian government and the largest guerrilla group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) signed a historic peace accord to end the armed conflict between these two groups.

Through much of the Colombian conflict, the involvement of US military and anti-drug policies has exacerbated violence and obscured the underlying social, political, and economic realities at the heart of the conflict. Delegates will see the effects of U.S. policy firsthand, analyzing the effects of military aid on communities, the impact of the U.S.-Colombia Free Trade Agreement and Labor Action Plan, and U.S. cooperation in the post-accords period. Delegates will learn about issues of internal displacement and armed conflict, grassroots peace building efforts and the peace process, and the work of human rights defenders throughout the country. They gain the knowledge and skills necessary to return to the United States and advocate against harmful U.S. policies, striving for new policies that uplift human rights and support Colombian communities on the ground.

Participants on this delegation will:

  • Learn about conflict and peacemaking and its impact on communities
  • Understand the importance of U.S. policy and how to better protect human rights in Colombia in the future.
  • Explore the relationship between the United States and Colombia through analyzing current policies.
